8th Birthday trip to the Isle of Wight, 20 August 2017
I couldn't miss a chance for a Big Day Out to celebrate my little friend Layla's 8th birthday. It would just be rude, and in any case Layla and her mum are my favourite people.
This time we tried the 09:00 Wightlink Portsmouth to Fishbourne ferry as the crossing was shorter, and although it was comfortable, the catering wasn't up to much so a couple of slices of toast with marmite had to do for breakfast.
This was Layla's first time on the island (and also her nan's) so the itinerary was pretty much an Isle of Wight Greatest Hits Tour.
We took in Ryde and Shanklin, drove through Sandown, took the road to Ventnor and had a picnic lunch in a car park on the front, along the gorgeous south coast road westward through Freshwater to The Needles.
Although it was a little cloudy, the rain held off until we left at The Needles at just gone 5 p.m. With no respite in sight, we went back through Yarmouth and Newport and then back to Fishbourne to get the 19:00 ferry.
A burger dinner in Portsmouth preceded a very wet journey back up the A3 and M25 home.
It was another cracking Big Day Out, enjoying lovely company.
