Painshill Park, 9 September 2017
I had seen the signs to Painshill on many occasions on the way to Wisley, but never managed to get there. There was an open day with free admission on 9 September, so it seemed a bit rude not to get there and see what it offered.
In short, I thought that Painshill Park was beautiful.
Painshill was created in the naturalistic style between 1738 and 1773, and was the artistic vision of the Honourable Charles Hamilton, 9th son and 14th child of the 6th Earl of Abercorn.
Hamilton was inspired by Renaissance and contemporary art and visits to Italy on the Grand Tour, the Hon. Charles Hamilton decided to create a tranquil landscape setting enriched by follies, water, trees, shrubberies and a vineyard.
The site was developed between 1738 and 1773 and was completed after Hon. Charles Hamilton was left £3,000 after his mother passed away.
The views and landscaping are lovely.
There is a man-made Crystal Grotto which has been recently restored.
Apparently the crystals which have all been fixed to the brick walls and ceilings by hand, and the Ooolite Limestone facings on the walls and hillsides around the entrance were all originally placed jigsaw-like by hand.
There is more information on the <Painshill Website>
This was a fairly short (a couple of hours) visit, but we will certainly be going again.
A brilliant site.
