David Bowie Jan 8 1947 - Jan 10 2016 Artistic Icon and Genius The cultural world has lost a leader, the like of which we may not see again. When I was first planning what I might put on this site, David Bowie was one of my original Music A-Z pages, and as I was writing that page I decided that less words said more. "Icon. Chameleon.Trend Setter. Never Follower. Ziggy Stardust. David Bowie is a bloody genius. That is all." For me, at least that says enough. After the release of the title track from his last album "Blackstar", I did go on record as saying that the sound and feel of that track were not for me. I thought it was a noise, and not in a good way. Since his passing and with hind sight, I felt that I should apologise via Facebook. Not for the fact that I did not enjoy the track, but for saying what I said before understanding his personal circumstances. I only heard the second single "Lazarus" after hearing the sad news, and although it was a very painful to watch, saw it as a pure David Bowie arrangement, in which he orchestrated the announcement of his impending demise from cancer. "Look At Me, I'm In Heaven" A very fitting epitaph. However, that is not how I want to remember Bowie. If I hear his name, my mind pictures David performing "Starman" in 1972 - strutting on stage on on Top of the Pops, his arm around Mick Ronson. I remember the outrage at the time, and even at that age also how good it felt that someone was cocking-a-snoot at convention. I was privileged to see The Thin White Duke just once, at Live Aid in 1985. He sang "Heroes", and typically generously introduced the heart-wrenching video for "Drive" by The Cars. At the time, I felt a bit short-changed as I wanted to see him - but hind sight is great at re-aligning these perceptions. "And the stars look very different today..." David Bowie
