Johnny Cash (1932 - 2003)
The Man In Black. The Man. The Last Great American.
"I'm Johnny Cash..."
Having been aware of Johnny Cash - I had heard "Folsum Prison Blues", "I Walk The Line", "Ring Of Fire", "Man In Black", "Boy Named Sue" and others over the years - I was intrigued by recordings he had made of more "modern" songs by various writers in the late 90's and early '00s.

Apparently Johnny Cash's view was that a good song is just that, a good song and had recorded covers of U2's "One", Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus", Nick Lowe's "The Beast In Me" and Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" amongst others.
As it happened, the series of six "American" albums are great. I think that although it must have been a buzz for the writers to know that the great man was going to cover their song, it must have been worrying for them because arguably the covers are better than the originals
I would urge any one to view the video of "Hurt". It is a very fitting epitaph.
For me, it is a hard watch but ultimately rewarding. He sings the song as the old man he was, but the images used are mixed with footage of him at his prime. I think it is stunning work.
Johnny Cash wore his heart on his black sleeve whenever he performed and over the years had more than his share of demons.
He died just over six months after losing the love of his life, June Carter.
55 studio albums - a great legacy.
He stands on his own.
