Bellowhead
Folk yes, but not as you expect it...
Their Twitter tag quotes the Independent “With the exception of the Who, Bellowhead are surely the best live act in the country”, and they are actually very, very good.
Bellowhead are a massive 11 (maybe 12) piece contemporary folk group.
Brilliant musicianship and dead jiggy.
Many a fine tune and shanty is sung about plagues in wartime, drunkenness and the visiting ladies of the night.
As Billy Bragg once introduced them, "Ladies and Gentlemen, the mighty Bellowhead"...
I first saw them on the BBC4 Folk at Christmas show a few years back.
I got a couple of CDs - "Matachin", "Hedonism" and "Broadside"
Saw them at The Roundhouse and chose to see them in the Leftfield Tent at Glastonbury 2011 rather than Beyonce (I don't regret that!).
Mighty and magnificent.
"Roll The Woodpile Down", "New York Girls", "Whiskey Is The Life Of Man", "London Town"
2015 - Jon Boden, Bellowhead's main man, voice and arranger has decided to call it a day after 11 years. The band has decided therefore to cease it's existence. One hell of a Farewell Party is scheduled for the first part of 2016.
I saw them at the Brighton Dome. A fitting farewell on 18 April.
Number of times seen: 4
Glastonbury 2011, The Roundhouse 2012, Hop Farm Festival 2014 and the Farewell in 2016
