English Lake District - Cumbria, 14-21 August 2021
This was the main break for the Summer.
One week in the Lake District, which has evaded me for probably 20 plus years.
The pandemic restrictions had opened up travel within the UK from 16 August, so bring it on...
A 5 hour drive from Reigate, but worth it.
It was a different sort of trip to the area than I had been on in the past. "Serious" hiking is not Jenny or Layla's thing, but both enjoy the fresh air and strolls. Jenny's mum is not really up to the rougher walks, but tries to get on with it.
As you will see, weather was mixed and cloud for most of the week pretty low.
We pulled by Thirlmere and I asked the group of chaps if they had been up Helvelyn that day. They replied that their walk had taken them 4 hours 45 minutes there and back, and that there was absolutely no view from the top.
During the week, we looking in some historic sites - Wray, Muncaster and Sedbergh Castles together with Catlerigg Stone Circle and Hilltop Farm, a few glorious and tricky passes - Hardknott and Wrynose, Kirkstone and Honister, and some wildlife - Muncaster Castle and the South Lakes Safari, as well as a million sheep in fields, on road sides and on the fells.
We had a great time.
