Box Hill Hike, 29 May
We are in the middle of a very dry, sunny period, so we thought a trip to nearby Box Hill was in order.
Parking being at a premium, we got a spot in the main car park by 09:45 and Layla took us down a path that she had walked on a school trip.
It seemed to follow the easy route marked in orange on the car park map, so off we marched. Marker posts with orange arrows marked "Box Hill Hike", so all seemed fair and dandy.
However.... after a while things didn't seem right as the short trail was going on, and on, and on, never getting close to the Viewpoint or other points around the top part of the hill which were marked on the map.
The sun was out and it was very warm.
More walking, up but mainly down hill.
When we arrived at another car park at Mickleham Down, a map showed that we were well out of position.
We continued. Following the orange "Box Hill Hike" markers, first up very steep steps cut into the hillside, then meandering down a path that eventually came to Mickleham Church.
Here we changed tack and went via the road and then a path from the Zig Zag Road to the top of Box Hill.
After checking the "Trail Board" outside the National Trust hut and re-checking the map, we discovered that the easy Orange "Box Hill highlights Trail (approx 1.5 miles)" on the map and Orange Way Marked "Box Hill Hike (8.5 miles)" were nothing to do with each other.
We learned a lesson, but still (in retrospect) had an enjoyable walk.
