Kate Nash <<scroll down for Photos>>
I must confess that I fell in love with Kate Nash when I first heard the famous lyrics of her breakthrough single "Foundations":
"You said I must eat so many lemons,
'cause I am so bitter.
I said "I'd rather be with your friends mate,
'cause they are much fitter"
At the time Lily Allen was taking over the world, but I thought that although their styles were similar, Kate Nash was more edgy which I liked. The songs appealed to me, as did the way she would musically mess with the sounds - sometimes giving a pause where you expect a note is breathtaking.
I heard and liked both of her first two albums "Made of Bricks" and "My Best Friend Is You" and ventured to see her play at Concorde 2 in Brighton. As I have two boys of about Kate's age, this was interesting - I felt a bit like a "dirty old man" queuing with teenage girls and patently I was well outside the normal Kate Nash demographic.
It turned out the gig was fantastic, and her all-girl band really, really good.
"Take Me To A Higher Plain", "Later On", "Mouthwash"
I found out that Kate Nash is a feminist activist, and empowers girls to have a go in the music business or whatever they want to do regardless of what people say. I have to applaud that. It seems that only 20-odd% of royalties from the music business are paid to women - implying that women are being squeezed out.
As she matured it turns out that her record label did not like the direction Kate Nash was going so dropped her.
Kate's reaction was to produce a track and publish it and a video over the internet "Under-Estimate The Girl". Saw a small gig at the Boileroom in Guildford which showed that her edge had got harder and her music more frantic. In short, the rumours of her career suicide were very exaggerated.
In 2013, I noticed that she was trying to crowd fund her next album via Pledge Music. I pledged, and subsequently the "Girl Talk" album appeared.
The track "Sister" contains a favourite lyric:
"I'm sorry, is that too dramatic? I should just be far more placid
Well blah-blah, blah-blah, me myself and I
I'm so funny, oh my god, ha ha"
"Death Proof", "3AM", "You're So Cool, I'm So Freaky"
I saw her at the 100 Club in London just after the release of the album and again at a great night at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London
I like Kate Nash a lot - she is clever, inspirational, badass and talented.
